What is ikat? Ikat is traditionally a style of weaving to create a pattern. Mostly used in Central and South America, it’s now tied to a tribal look that can be summed up as “all the rage”. This look did start emerging a year ago (and popped up many years before) but this year has made a big impact on the designer radar.
In apparel, Oscar de la Renta, Marc Jacobs and DKNY have all been fans of ikat, including it in shoes, jersey print shirts and dresses. While there is a fondness for ikat in accessories, it’s also apparent as the centerpiece.
In bedding, Josie Natori is a designer who’s always on the edge of world fashion. Her “Palace” bed design captures ikat subtly in the sheets and accessories.
In stationary, Love & Luck and Cursive (found in ABC Home) both use the motif in agenda books and stationary.
Dressed up, down, monotone or colorful, it’s not a wonder designers are inspired by this motif, it can be transformed in so many different ways.
